Background of the Study

Effective waste management is crucial for maintaining public health, particularly in rapidly growing urban centers such as Kano State. Improper waste disposal and inadequate waste management practices can lead to a range of environmental and health problems, including the spread of infectious diseases, contamination of water sources, and air pollution. In Kano State, both urban and rural areas face challenges related to waste management, such as limited waste collection services, inefficient disposal systems, and low levels of public awareness about the dangers of improper waste disposal. This study will assess the waste management practices in Kano State and their impact on public health, with the aim of providing evidence-based recommendations for improving waste management systems.

Statement of the Problem

Kano State has witnessed rapid urbanization, which has exacerbated waste management challenges. Poor waste management practices, such as open dumping and inadequate sanitation infrastructure, have significant implications for public health. The improper disposal of waste contributes to the spread of diseases like cholera, malaria, and respiratory illnesses, especially in low-income areas. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of waste management practices in Kano State and their direct impact on public health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the waste management practices in Kano State and their effectiveness in maintaining public health.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between waste management practices and the incidence of preventable diseases in Kano State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving waste management systems to enhance public health in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the prevalent waste management practices in Kano State?
  2. How do waste management practices affect the incidence of diseases in Kano State?
  3. What improvements can be made to waste management systems to promote better public health in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor waste management practices are associated with an increased incidence of preventable diseases in Kano State.
  2. Communities with more effective waste management systems experience fewer public health issues.
  3. Improving waste management practices will significantly reduce the occurrence of waste-related diseases in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on urban and rural areas of Kano State, evaluating both formal and informal waste management practices. Limitations may include the difficulty of accessing some rural areas and potential biases in the reporting of waste management practices due to underreporting of informal practices.

Definitions of Terms
